Authors’ Festival Connects Kids With Nationally Known Writers

An exciting new event is being introduced this year in conjunction with the 2011 CCIRA Literacy Conference. The Authors’ Festival puts young people in grades 2-10 in direct contact with nationally known authors to talk about writing. The featured authors are Mike Thaler (Librarian from the Black Lagoon), Liz Scanlon (All the World), Alan Sitomer (Hip Hop High School), and local favorite Dom Testa (The Galahad series).

There will also be time for book signings, and registration for the Authors’ Festival includes a ticket for the Young Writers Award Luncheon featuring Colorado’s own Janet Stevens and her sister Susan Stevens Crummel, who will have you laughing with their hilarious take on what it’s like to be sisters.

Time and place: Marriott Denver Tech Center,  Saturday February 5, 8am-1pm

Registration: Open to the public, $20 for each child participating or adult accompanying. There must be one adult for every four children attending. Space is limited to 150 participants.

Literacy-Enhanced Storytimes Workshop – March 19

Want to juice up your library storytime? Make your storytimes better-than-ever? Attend an all-day interactive and hands-on workshop using the 6 skills and techniques of Every Child Ready to Read (ECRR) in your library storytimes.

Experienced trainer Carol Wagstaff (Douglas County Libraries) and Colorado Libraries for Early Literacy (CLEL) will review ECRR resources and coach you through how you can use ECRR techniques and plan a literacy-enhanced storytime. Come prepared to practice dialogic reading and give parent tips.

The workshop will be limited to 25 participants and priority will be given to Western Slope libraries. Additional registrants will placed on a waiting list.

2010 Statewide Summer Reading Program – TO DOs

  1. Register for the 2010 summer reading program and request FREE materials. (Libraries that have already registered will receive their materials by the end of January.)
  2. Apply for a $175 Mini-Grant. Applications are due January 29, 2010.
  3. Weigh in on the slogan and theme suggestions for summers 2012 and 2013.

CO Libraries for Early Literacy Annual Meeting Invitation

Since our organization began in early 2008, we have been a small but determined organization working to strengthen children’s literacy through library services and community advocacy. We have had a chance to work on some very cool projects and are now poised to grow in size and influence. We welcome your interest and involvement!

The meeting will include:

* A session on what early literacy programs and services look like at public libraries across Colorado – gather ideas for your library and share your own ideas with others!
* Time to meet and network with other Colorado library staff interested in early literacy

Register Now for the 2009 Statewide Summer Reading Programs

Registration for the 2009 Statewide Summer Reading Programs (“Be Creative” children’s theme and “Express Yourself” teen theme) is now open! Registration allows your library to request the following:

  • –Program manual with graphics CD for both the children and teen themes;
  • –Basic kit of incentive materials for the “Be Creative” children’s theme containing posters, bookmarks, reading certificates, and stickers;
  • –Basic kit of incentive materials for the “Express Yourself” teen theme containing posters, bookmarks, reading records, and temporary tattoos (the teen basic kits are available to the first 75 registrants only).

NOTE: Public libraries must register by library jurisdiction and not by individual branches. Please appoint one person to register for all branches in your jurisdiction, and request sufficient materials for all.
