Not a User of the Colorado Virtual Library? You Will Be!

Or at least we hope you’ll give it a shot, once the dust settles.

When the Colorado Virtual Library (CVL) was launched over a decade ago, it was a new and exciting resource, unlike anything available in the Colorado library community at that time. But times have changed, and we regret to confess, the CVL hasn’t. The way that we use the internet and the kinds of tools available to us are changing at a breakneck pace, and the rate of change is only accelerating. It’s with all of this in mind that we’re approaching a complete redesign of the CVL.

Our Approach

While technical decisions are still in the works, we know we’ll be building an ever-changing collection of content modules (more on that in a minute!) around a central core of heavily-used library services such as AskColorado’s awesome 24/7 reference service, SWIFT interlibrary loan (soon with more patron-initiated functionality!), and access to valuable digital collections. Those content modules will be developed on an as-needed basis, allowing us to be more responsive to your needs and those of your patrons. Continue reading ‘Not a User of the Colorado Virtual Library? StoryBlocks: A New Tool To Build Early Literacy Skills

The Colorado State Library announces the launch of  www.storyblocks.org, StoryBlocks image
an online video collection featuring  one-minute songs and rhymes for babies, toddlers and preschool children in both English and Spanish. Filmed in partnership with Rocky Mountain PBS, librarians throughout Colorado share successful activities as well as literacy tips. Parents, child care providers and others will discover ways to engage very young children in fun and playful interactions that also build healthy brain development.

StoryBlocks.org is a project of the Colorado Libraries for Early Literacy (CLEL), an advisory group to the State Library. CLEL received a federal grant from the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to create the videos and Web site. The goal is to build awareness and to encourage parents and others to engage with children from birth on early language and pre-literacy skills. The methods used in the videos are based on brain and child development research that show the impact that songs, rhymes and stories have on very young children. 2010-2011 Grants Available for School, Public, Academic & Special Libraries

The Colorado State Library has announced competitive grants for fiscal year 2010-2011 through the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) program, designed to distribute federal funds to eligible school, public, academic or special libraries. Total amount awarded during this funding period will be approximately $300,000.

For the purpose of this grant, libraries must meet the following LSTA 5-year plan combined goal:
“Colorado libraries will provide services to support educational achievement and lifelong learning of Colorado residents, people with disabilities, ethnic populations, institutional residents, and those underserved by libraries.”

For more information, visit the State Library’s LSTA page.

Just launched: LRS.org

The Library Research Service at the Colorado State Library launched a new website yesterday. It is a whole new look with updated navigation, graphics, and features. We invite you to poke around the site and let us know what you think.

Along with this redesign, our blog is moving to a different home and platform.

The new LRS.org took months of work, and it couldn’t have been done without the entire LRS staff. Special thanks to Zeth Lietzau for his vision and hard work in making the site a reality and Jamie Daisey for her work moving and editing the content.

Libraries. A place of endless possibilities. The heart of many stories.

Two people meet in nonfiction and fall in love. A boy finds salvation in his local library and becomes the first in his family to attend college. A suburban mother of four relies on the library’s expert reference service to start her own business, and later is named “Entrepreneur of the Year.”

Come visit the State Library’s booth at the CAL exhibit hall to share YOUR story! You can write it, type it, or tell it (we will have flip cameras). Read fantastic stories of your colleagues and celebrate the many ways libraries transform lives.

Need more reason? Submit YOUR story and become eligible to win one of these fabulous prizes!
