Tour a new Arapahoe Library District branch

I paid a recent unscheduled visit to the new Southglenn Library, a branch of the Arapahoe Library District. Hearing reports about the design of this library, I was interested to find out what was new, what was tried and what was true.

What greeted me was an open layout, a sense of airy space, and a notably clean view from one side of the library to the other.

It’s Showtime! @ Your Library

Cinematic programming can be a phenomenal way to promote library services and the library as a fun interactive community gathering space. Many libraries here in Colorado show films either as part of a seasonal event or throughout the year. Some libraries operate these events as an extension of their Collection Development department, have committees to oversee and staff the events or even have one lone devotee who manages the entire affair. Most libraries have a blanket license, most commonly from Swank, also know as Movie Licensing USA, to avoid any copyright infringement. Featuring films can draw attention to the diversity of our collections and our residents and emphasize our value to the public. These less traditional events have the unique ability to attract current, new and lapsed library customers. While each library varies in it’s approach to film exhibition, the results are the same. Happy families and individuals gleaning enjoyment and stimulation from the library. Continue reading ‘It’s Showtime! @ Your Library’

Children’s Art Benefits Arapahoe Libraries

The Arapahoe Library District is participating in the Tile Project which will showcase the artwork of Colorado children painted on tiles and displayed in the concierge lobby at the new Streets of SouthGlenn shopping plaza. Tiles are $25, and tax-deductible, with all proceeds going to the Arapahoe Library District Friends Foundation to assist with programming such as the Summer Reading Program, writing workshops and computer classes. The tiles will be painted over several Saturdays – August 29th, September 12th, and September 19th with sessions in the morning (10am-1pm) and in the afternoon (1pm-4pm). Tiles, paint and brushes will be provided. There are a limited number of tiles available and time slots are available on a first come, first served basis. The last day to register is September 15th. All participants will be invited to a special breakfast to celebrate the wall’s unveiling.

Those interested in volunteering for the Tile Project or with the Arapahoe Library District, please contact Louise Richey at lrichey@ald.lib.co.us or 303.792.8999 extension 19106.

School Library 101 Tutorial

Arapahoe Library District has partnered with CLiC to provide a classy interactive tutorial for school librarians. The tutorial (part one of a two part series) is not only for beginner librarians, but also for the folks who have been school librarians for awhile. Pop in, see what you think, and then let us know! If you think other school librarians (especially newbies) would benefit from viewing the tutorial pass it along. A special thanks to Lisa Priebe and Donna Miller for getting this project launched!
