Red Feather Lakes Community Library in Woman’s Day Magazine

Congratulations to Red Feather Lakes Community Library for its mention in the march issue of Woman’s Day Magazine!

Woman’s day magazine, in partnership with ALA, has been helping promote libraries by sharing stories about how libraries have changed women’s lives since 2002. Continue reading ‘Red Feather Lakes Community Library in Woman’s Day Magazine’

First Timer at ALA Midwinter

This year I was lucky enough to attend my first-ever ALA. On Friday, January 23rd, I braved the Colorado Convention Center (and its dizzying parking structure) to browse the exhibits hall. I think “wow” was the first word I thought as I entered the huge building and saw the mass of people all crowding on to the escalators. That word was repeated often throughout the evening, first as I took in the sheer number of booths, and later as I realized how much – there’s no other word for it – stuff – was being given away. It was overwhelming. More than that, though, it was fascinating. I was grateful to have the opportunity to be a real part of the national library community; I met people from right here in the state, from around the U.S. including New Mexico and New York, and even some overseas folks. ALA Midwinter Meeting in Denver – Jan 23–28, 2009

ALA

Oh come on, I hear you saying – that’s not ’til January! But trust me, there’s a committee already hard at work planning the festivities. Colorado Association of Libraries and Denver Public Library will be sharing a booth to let those out of state librarians know how wonderful Colorado libraries are. Interested in working at the booth? Send me an email.

Also in the works is a preconference and a reception for Camila Alire. More information will be coming your way (would I leave you in the dark?) as they are finalized.

Grants Aren’t Always A Long Shot

Congratulations to several Coloradoans who received some grant money this month. Patty Chapman, Judy Van Acker and Sue Keefer received the Colorado State Library’s scholarship to attend ALA. This must have been Sue’s lucky month, because she also received an additional $5000 from Anschutz Family Foundation to boost her general operating costs to support ongoing programs that reach out to the Spanish community. Lastly, Gretchen Villers from Custer County School District received $5000 from ALA’s ALSC Division from their Bookapalooza Grant. This grant gives only 3 libraries across the country $5000 in free books.

Gretchen stated in her application,
“I want my students to experience not just the horses, cattle and rodeo of our ranching community, but to also know about Africa and New York City and people who are different from them. I believe it is through books that our children can experience this.”
Congratulations, Gretchen!

The point in all this is to encourage you to take some time to look at some of these opportunities and see if they fit with your goals. CLiC consultants are happy to offer advice and direct you to resources that can help make sure you have the best chance of receiving additional funding. If I missed anyone, please comment on my post!

Wikis for Everyone

If you haven’t worked with colleagues on a wiki yet, you would be surprised at how easy and powerful a tool it is. At CLiC we experimented with lots of the “freebies” including Writely (now bought by Google and no longer free.) There are still lots of free wikis available and one of the most touted ones is PB Wiki, which you can find at http://pbwiki.com/. It describes itself as: “A PBWiki is an easy-to-use webpage that multiple people can edit. It’s as easy to make as a peanut butter sandwich!”

ALA has launched the Read Write Connect wiki as a one-stop-shop for all things 2.0 from ALA, divisions, roundtables, and offices. On the wiki you’ll find links to various ALA sponsored blogs, wikis, Flickr accounts, MySpace and FaceBook pages, and more.
Check it out at: http://wikis.ala.org/readwriteconnect

If all this is as clear as mud, come to one of the CLiC workshops and attend one of the techie sessions. Remember, there are scholarships available for all the workshops on the CLiC website: www.clicweb.org

Workshop Dates:
Greeley – March 15 – 16
Grand Junction – March 22 – 23
Pueblo – April 19 – 20

Off to Seattle for ALA Midwinter

This is my first conference as ALA Councilor. If you think the libnet listserv is time-consuming, you should see the Council listserv! I suppose just before conferences will be the busiest time, and rightfully so. Two important discussions will take place at ALA Seattle – one is calling for a resolution that supports $40,000 as a minimum salary for a professional librarian. The other is a review of the standards of accreditation for Master’s Programs in Library and Informatin Studies. If you click on the title of this post – “Off to Seattle…” you will find a link to the draft report/proposal. I’ll report back in detail to you all after my return from Seattle. Please contact me if you have any comments to make about ALA resolutions or business.
