An exciting new event is being introduced this year in conjunction with the 2011 CCIRA Literacy Conference. The Authors’ Festival puts young people in grades 2-10 in direct contact with nationally known authors to talk about writing. The featured authors are Mike Thaler (Librarian from the Black Lagoon), Liz Scanlon (All the World), Alan Sitomer (Hip Hop High School), and local favorite Dom Testa (The Galahad series).
There will also be time for book signings, and registration for the Authors’ Festival includes a ticket for the Young Writers Award Luncheon featuring Colorado’s own Janet Stevens and her sister Susan Stevens Crummel, who will have you laughing with their hilarious take on what it’s like to be sisters.
Time and place: Marriott Denver Tech Center, Saturday February 5, 8am-1pm
Registration: Open to the public, $20 for each child participating or adult accompanying. There must be one adult for every four children attending. Space is limited to 150 participants.

The 23rd Annual Colorado Teen Literature Conference (CTLC) will be held at the University of Colorado – Denver’s Auraria Campus on Saturday, April 2, 2010, with keynote speaker Pete Hautman (author of All-in, Godless, How to Steal a Car, Invisible, No Limit, Rash, the upcoming Blank Confession and others). This popular event is generously sponsored by Metropolitan State College of Denver, the University of Colorado-Denver, the Colorado Language Arts Society (CLAS), Pikes Peak Library District, Colorado Young Adult Advocates in Libraries (C’YAAL), REFORMA Colorado, and Fleetthought.
We are currently accepting proposals for program sessions at the conference. This is an excellent opportunity to try your hand as a presenter or moderator of a discussion panel. The work you do to support your readers with the Summer Reading program is a great outreach to the community. But did you know that it also makes a difference in students’ reading abilities and ultimately—test scores?
What is summer loss?
The idea of students slipping in their reading abilities is called “summer loss.” The concept is based, in part, on the research of James Sangil Kim, Ed.D., assistant professor of education at Harvard University. Dr. Kim’s research suggests that while many students’ reading skills diminish over the summer months away from school, students who read a minimum of eight high-interest books at their Lexile level over the summer can achieve similar gains in reading growth as students who attend summer school.
How your actions help
Durham Public Schools in North Carolina have implemented a Lexile program based on Dr. Kim’s research with success. Watch a 4-minute video about how the program boosted their summer reading success. And here’s how the Durham County Library implemented the Lexile-based program with reading lists that could easily be replicated through WorldCat.org lists (rather than having to build a specific page on your Web site.) “Explore! Hero Moon” will acquaint you NASA’s investigations into the ongoing saga that has shaped our Moon. Discover our scientific, cultural, and personal understanding of Earth’s nearest natural neighbor. Scientists and educators from the NASA Lunar Science Institute and the Lunar and Planetary Institute will share space science information, resources, hands-on activities, and demonstrations developed specifically for you to infuse into your programs with children and youth ages 8 to 13 and their families.
The workshop is FREE. A $150 stipend is available for 30 participants. A stipend request form will be emailed to participants on a first-come-first-accepted basis.
Space is limited! Register by July 16, 2010.
