Public libraries in the U.S have been promoting summer library programs since 1898.  Reading regularly during the summer helps students to prevent “summer set-back” where students can lose reading gains of the previous school year.

 The State Library has been giving out the grants since 2004.   Library sites receive $200 to spend on books and materials to support their summer library programming and provide a local match of 25% of the grant.  The statewide summer reading theme for 2010 is “Make a Splash, READ!”  The teen theme is “Make Waves @ your library.”

Registration entitles you to the following free materials:

• *A program manual which contains children’s and teen activities, as well as a disc with graphics for both programs;
• * A basic kit of children’s incentive materials which includes posters, bookmarks, certificates, and stickers (will be sent in spring 2010); and
• * A basic kit of teen incentive materials which includes posters, bookmarks, reading records, and temporary tattoos (the teen basic kits are available to the first 100 registrants only, and will be sent in spring 2010).

NOTE:

1. Public libraries must register by library jurisdiction and not by individual branches. Please appoint one person to register for all branches in your jurisdiction, and request sufficient materials for all.
2. Please ensure that you have completed your reports for the 2009 summer reading program and for the 2009 mini-grants (if you received one). Libraries that have not completed these reports will not be eligible for 2010 materials.

In the morning, Kathy Barco from the Albuquerque Public Library presented ideas for 2010 summer reading, including decorations, crafts, celebrations, activities, refreshments, programs, and more. The themes are “Make a Splash @ Your Library” (children) and “Make Waves @ Your Library” (teens).

The afternoon included discussion of after-school programming, a report on the LSTA Early Literacy (CLEL) Storytime grants, an update on State Library youth services initiatives, and of course distribution of the 2010 statewide summer reading program manuals.

The Colorado Library Consortium (CLiC) invites submissions for presentations at our Spring Workshops in 2010 in the following locations:

Grand Junction, March 1 & 2

Fort Collins, April 8

Pueblo, April 15 & 16

Our annual workshops serve as a fun forum to learn, network, and stimulate discussion about library related topics. The workshop program will include competitively-selected presentations, as well as a small number of invited speakers. Sessions may be either 75 minutes or half day. Topics appropriate for submission to this conference include, but are not limited to the following:

• Technology, including social computing, tools, gaming technologies, open source, etc.
• Library administration
• Services to children, teens, adults, disadvantaged, e.g. programs, booktalks
• Library development – including marketing, fundraising, grant writing
• Reference
• Collaboration between libraries
• Community involvement 
• Academic, school, public library issues
• Intellectual freedom
• Board, volunteers

Please keep in mind the following:

• CLiC staff will review all submitted proposals for their content, timeliness, and relevance and reserves the right to choose and accept proposals based on the criteria.
• CLiC will treat all submissions as suggestions and guideposts.
• Time management issues and reimbursement guidelines generally limit each session (both 75 minute and half day) to two speakers.
• We are seeking programs geared for newcomers to the profession as well as experienced library staff.
• We are interested in sessions for public, school, and academic librarians.
• Presenters may attend the full conference for free and will receive assistance with travel expenses.

The Colorado State Library (CSL) received an incredible number of votes for this year’s pin, but one of the designs was the clear winner.

Following the same procedure as previous years, CSL will place a large pin order and would be glad to “piggyback” and add your order to ours. This is a great way to promote next year’s programs and, as you can see below, placing a large order will make it cost effective for all of us.

0 – 9,999 = $0.63 ea.
10,000+ = $0.58 ea.
NOTE: Add $5 shipping & handling charge for orders being shipped outside of Colorado.We are hoping to order at least 5,000, so plan on paying 63 cents per pin. If we collect orders for over 10,000 pins, the price will drop to 58 cents. You will be emailed an invoice with the total amount owed, and this will be payable once you receive the pins in October.

The pins will take about 4 weeks to produce, from start to finish, plus another 1-2 weeks to ship. We will submit our bulk order on Monday, August 24th NO LATER THAN NOON.
