The Colorado Library Consortium (CLiC) invites submissions for presentations at our Spring Workshops in 2010 in the following locations:

Grand Junction, March 1 & 2

Fort Collins, April 8

Pueblo, April 15 & 16

Our annual workshops serve as a fun forum to learn, network, and stimulate discussion about library related topics. The workshop program will include competitively-selected presentations, as well as a small number of invited speakers. Sessions may be either 75 minutes or half day. Topics appropriate for submission to this conference include, but are not limited to the following:

• Technology, including social computing, tools, gaming technologies, open source, etc.
• Library administration
• Services to children, teens, adults, disadvantaged, e.g. programs, booktalks
• Library development – including marketing, fundraising, grant writing
• Reference
• Collaboration between libraries
• Community involvement 
• Academic, school, public library issues
• Intellectual freedom
• Board, volunteers

Please keep in mind the following:

• CLiC staff will review all submitted proposals for their content, timeliness, and relevance and reserves the right to choose and accept proposals based on the criteria.
• CLiC will treat all submissions as suggestions and guideposts.
• Time management issues and reimbursement guidelines generally limit each session (both 75 minute and half day) to two speakers.
• We are seeking programs geared for newcomers to the profession as well as experienced library staff.
• We are interested in sessions for public, school, and academic librarians.
• Presenters may attend the full conference for free and will receive assistance with travel expenses.

The deadline for this call for proposals is October 15, 2009. You will be contacted about the status of your proposal by November 15, 2009.

The Colorado State Library (CSL) received an incredible number of votes for this year’s pin, but one of the designs was the clear winner.

Following the same procedure as previous years, CSL will place a large pin order and would be glad to “piggyback” and add your order to ours. This is a great way to promote next year’s programs and, as you can see below, placing a large order will make it cost effective for all of us.

Pricing details:
0 – 9,999 = $0.63 ea.
10,000+ = $0.58 ea.
NOTE: Add $5 shipping & handling charge for orders being shipped outside of Colorado.We are hoping to order at least 5,000, so plan on paying 63 cents per pin. If we collect orders for over 10,000 pins, the price will drop to 58 cents. You will be emailed an invoice with the total amount owed, and this will be payable once you receive the pins in October.

The pins will take about 4 weeks to produce, from start to finish, plus another 1-2 weeks to ship. We will submit our bulk order on Monday, August 24th NO LATER THAN NOON.

Librarians arrived from near and far (through rain, sleet, snow and even thunder!) to the CLiC Spring Workshops at CSU-Pueblo last week. Keynote speaker, George Needham – V.P of OCLC, wowed the breakfast morning crowd on Thursday with new discoveries from the latest OCLC report From Awareness to Funding. The two day event offered librarians 50 sessions to choose from, and had the campus buzzing with library talk. We overheard one CSU student curiously asked another student what the heck was going on in the ballroom. The response -”I don’t know, I think a bunch of old people are taking classes”.  Well, we may be a graying profession but there were plenty of exciting ideas, plans, and sharing happening in Pueblo. Grand Junction – What stood out about George’s presentation of the study

• Supporters do not = users
• users don’t vote for funding for fear of library changing if it gets more money
• need to focus on the Future, not the past
• doing too good a job hiding our needs
• when the library has something new, let the community know early
• embedded librarian (and Board and Friends) out in the community who listen and bring information back
• find super supporters and use them as teh “voice” for the library
• libraries transforming lives

Greeley – what stood out about George’s talk

• usage does not = support
• passionate librarians, management AND staff
• being a resource to the community as a librarian, not just promoting the library to the community
• appreciation for the study – needed, timely, can actually use it!
• time is scarce. Information is limitless.
• moving from “information” to “transformation”
• pyramid – powerful tool, different % in different towns, a whole new structure for community analysis
• power of conveying the “meaning” of the library, effect on planning and marketing
• surprise (makes sense) to ignore the bottom, non-voting part of pyramid
• ROI – What patrons will see vs. need and motivators
