The State Library offered 6 interactive, informative youth services workshops in Rifle, Eagle, Pueblo, Englewood, Boulder, and Dolores in October and November. A total of 132 attendees (an unfortunately timed snowstorm near Pueblo lessened attendance) from 47 library jurisdictions came to learn about the 2012 summer reading program and early literacy, and to network with colleagues.

Kathy Barco, Children’s Librarian at the Albuquerque/Bernalillo County Library System in New Mexico, presented the lively morning session highlighting the 2012 summer reading program theme of night time at all 6 sessions. Colorado Libraries for Early Literacy (CLEL) members Jana Ackerman, Lisa Chipouras, Laura Baldassari-Hackstaff, Melissa Depper, and Becky Campbell offered informative, useful afternoon sessions on early literacy, including an overview of the newly revised Every Child Ready to Read program.

Handouts from the workshops are available, including Becky Campbell’s early literacy presentation.

Some comments from workshop attendees:

It was so helpful to start thinking about summer reading ideas and talk to other youth librarians in the area.

I love getting ideas for activities plus meeting others and getting their input.

Both of the presenters were fabulous! They were entertaining, enthusiastic, and really held my attention.

This year was a great balance between SRP ideas and very appropriate Early Childhood ideas.

Worthwhile content–Ideas, conversations, motivation. Thank you!

I really enjoyed tying books to early literacy skills.

Extremely helpful. The SRP theme seemed difficult until the workshop and now has become clear.

For more resources, tips, and research about early literacy, check out the CLEL website—or better yet join the group; it’s free!

To learn more about the 2012 summer reading program, visit the Collaborative Summer Library Program website. With the overall theme of night time, program slogans will encourage children to “Dream Big—Read,” while teens will “Own the Night.” Adults can interpret their slogan, “Between the Covers,” in a variety of ways, but we hope they’ll be encouraged along the way to read over the summer. Watch for more information and opportunities on the CYS-Lib listserv and here on this blog, and attend the summer reading program session at the CLiC Spring Workshops 2012!

“Our teens are reading and uploading their reviews-we can’t keep up with them! As part of our summer program we are creating a mural for our main patio space. The Mural was designed with the teens by one of our very talented service specialists on staff. Kids are designing beautiful book pages. ”

Wilkinson PL is going to celebrate the end of their summer program on August 12th with a pop and lock workshop! “We have a professional choreographer from LA (with ties to the Telluride Community) who will be working with us to host this event.”

You may now place your order for READ pins for the 2012 statewide summer reading program.

We received 158 votes for this year’s pin (!!!), but this design (adjusted due to feedback from many of you) was the clear winner.

Following the same procedure as previous years, the Colorado State Library will place a large pin order and would be glad to “piggyback” and add your order to ours. This is a great way to promote next year’s programs, and placing a large order will make it cost effective for all of us.

Pricing details: $0.60 each (lower than last year!)

You will be emailed an invoice with the total amount owed, and this will be payable once you receive the pins in late September/early October. NOTE: A $5 shipping & handling charge will be added for orders being shipped outside of Colorado.

We will submit our bulk order on 8/12, so please submit your order NO LATER THAN Thursday, August 11th. Thank you!

“First picture is of the kids’ summer program with the kids meeting Apache the wolf. They got to pet and learn all about wolves at our June 28th program where we had record breaking attendance of 241.”

“Second Picture is of the teen summer reading program where they got to create travel journals. We have 31 teens registered and a record 15 show weekly for programs.”
