For the CAL Conference 2008, Communities and Libraries, I created this list of top ten trends in Colorado libraries related to communities and libraries. Examples are also below. I provided this for the Commissioner of Education for his opening keynote presentation. Thought others might be interested.
Early childhood brain research is changing library storytimes.*
- Multimedia production in libraries – videos, podcasts, etc.
- Literacy – engaging the larger community (One Book, etc.)
- The Library Online* – AskColorado, local archives online, 21 Plinkit websites
- Green Buildings
- Creation spaces, activities, collections
- Community Outreach
- Job support and economic development
- Gaming*
- Services to Special Populations*

Serendipity frequently plays a part in my learning and steers my reading into new areas. I won’t detail all of the steps that led me down this particular path, but recently I read about one way the Fraser Valley Library, part of the Grand County Library District, is seeing use of its free Wi-Fi network.
A member of the community, originally from Australia, uses the library’s wireless network to videoconference with family members a world away, using Skype. I’d say this qualifies as a “library-without-walls service,” wouldn’t you? The story is worth reading in the Ski-High Daily News.
Hats off to the GCLD for continuing to serve its community in innovative ways!
Red Feather Lakes Community Library is getting a new website via Plinkit. In July, Sharon Morris of the Colorado State Library went to Red Feather to train staff and plan design for the website. We hope to have something live by September. Red Feather Lakes Community Library will be the 21 Plinkit library in Colorado.
While there, Sharon took several photos including these.

A new group for Western Slope Librarians has formed and its new name is River Path Library Leaders (RPLL). Comprised mostly of libraries from the former Three Rivers and Path Finder Systems, this informal group has evolved from recent meetings in Aspen and Glenwood Springs. RPLL currently will have no dues, no membership list, just participation and promotion of libraries on the Western Slope. The intent is to provide networking opportunities, increased communication and promote training and other activities to Libraries in our region.
A listserv has been established as a first step in doing this and anyone may subscribe by visiting http://email.marmot.org/mailman/listinfo/rpll . With almost 40 subscribers already, spread from Granby to Delta and everywhere in between, I am excited about the potential for RPLL.
The next meeting of RPLL will be on July 30th in Glenwood Springs at a location TBD.
Stay tuned for further developments!!
