Cool Technology at Estes Park Public Library

Vertical CatalogI had the pleasure of visiting the Estes Park Public Library for an AskColorado meeting. The facility is beautiful (and really aren’t all libraries?), and the surroundings enchanting. However, it was the unusual configuration of their catalogs that caught my eye.

These vertical catalog stations appear to run on magic…where is the CPU?

Thanks to Claudine Perrault and Mark Riffle for the detailed documentation of how these cool catalogs are set up: Continue reading ‘Cool Technology at Estes Park Public Library’

Bennett Library Opening

Bennett It was a beautiful day in Bennett, CO, as Pam Sandlian Smith spoke about their newest library in the Rangeview Library District. The enthusiastic crowd awaited the opening of their new library as speeches were given recognizing those involved in the project. The 7,000 square foot building replaces the original branch that was opened in 1974 on the same site. Many sustainable building practices were used throughout the building including recycled beetle-killed pine for the ceiling and paneling, ground source heating and cooling, solatube natural light sourcing,  and photovoltaic solar array. Also unique to this library, as highlighted in the 6/9/09 Denver Post article, “Adams County Libraries Shelving Dewey Decimal” is the elimination of the Dewey Decimal Classification system replaced by the use of word categories. Another fine example of a Colorado library with an eye to the future. Congratulations to all.

Four Corners: One Book program

KSUT Four Corners Public Radio continues its new Four Corners: One Book community-wide, online book club with The Hemingway Book Club of Kosovo, a book by Durango’s Paula Huntley.

Every month, KSUT partners with a different public library or local bookstore in making the Four Corners: One Book selection. This month, KSUT has teamed up with the Lavenia McCoy Public Library in Bayfield, which chose The Hemingway Book Club of Kosovo because of its well-written and inspiring tale about how one person can make a difference.  The library has invited Huntley to talk about her book and real-life experience in Kosovo just after the Kosovo war at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 18.

Like Coming Home

Stratton Public LibraryI had the pleasure of visiting the Stratton Public Library last week (in between snowstorms), and I was struck by how familiar the library seemed. Located in a former church building, The Stratton Public Library was bright, cheery, and well organized (of course). Continue reading ‘Like Coming Home’

Power Libraries Program Application – Open Until Tuesday 3/31

The Power Libraries Program application has been re-opened, and will remain open until 11:59pm on Tuesday, March 31st.

Please contact me with any questions.

Power Libraries Program Applications – Deadline Will Be Extended

Due to the inclement weather and other extenuating factors, the Power Libraries Program application deadline will be extended. Since some of our staff is not available today because of the snow, I don’t have the details yet.

More information to come on when the application will re-open and for how long.

Note: I am back in the office now, so please direct any questions to my work phone (303-866-6894) or work e-mail (gebhart_m@cde.state.co.us).

Reminder: Power Libraries Program Applications Due TODAY, 3/26/09

Just a reminder that applications for the Power Libraries Program are due today, March 26, 2009.

Note: since many of you are experiencing trouble faxing your signature page (this comes at the end of the application) due to snow, staff being out on spring break, etc., please just send the signature page as soon as possible. If that means next week or first thing the week after, that’s fine.

Please contact me with any questions. I am not sure if CDE will be leaving early because of the snow, so just in case, my personal e-mail is michelle.gebhart@gmail.com, and my cell phone is 720-366-2349,

Twittering in the Colorado Library Community

Last week I sent out a message on Libnet asking who was using Twitter. The responses I received have been compiled into a spreadsheet for anyone who is interested. There are Twitter users from Colorado cities, public libraries, schools, and museums, as well as other State Libraries, national organizations, local, state and federal government, and more. Thanks for the wonderful response! Colorado has a growing Twitter community and I can only see it getting bigger and becoming more useful to us all over time.

Orientation signage for patrons

Estes Park Library trail signI saw some clever signage at the Estes Park Public Library recently. Trail patterns in the carpet lead patrons to various parts of the library. When journeying past the information desk, an explorer will encounter a trail marker, with guidance to key landmarks inside as well as beyond the building!

On the second floor of the library, I found some creative uses of historic postcard imagery. What a great inspiration for lampshades! Check out our Flickr site for more photos of this site visit.
