Colorado Adds SIX Movers & Shakers!

It’s 2011, and Colorado has added SIX new Movers and Shakers to the ranks, for a total of 20. This annual honor is sponsored by Library Journal. Congratulations to:

AIRS Announces 2011-12 Statewide Package

The AIRS Committee (Acquisition of Information Resources Statewide) has negotiated with OCLC and EBSCO to provide selected databases covering general, business and K-12 information at a special Colorado statewide rate.
For the coming fiscal year (July 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012), the statewide package of databases has been finalized. Details about the FY11-12 program are available on the AIRS web site. The AIRS Committee was able to keep pricing stable for FY2011-2012 even while many libraries with shrinking budgets were forced to drop out last year and may be dropping out during the coming year.

Online Twitter Directory for Libraries – Add Your Name!

The State Library has put together a Twitter directory for the Colorado library and education community, and we invite you to add your Twitter username to the list.

This directory is an online version of the content that was previously kept in an ever-growing spreadsheet, for those of you who remember it. Anyone on that spreadsheet has automatically been added to the new directory.

Please check out the directory and look for your Twitter username. If you don’t see it, you may add it by following the Submit an Account link at the top of the page. To edit or remove your information from this directory or to pass on any comments or suggestions, please email Michelle Gebhart. And don’t forget to search for colleagues; this new site makes it easy to search by username or category.Twitter-Icon

After-Hours Service, Widgets and More

Happy Spring. A few new things have been happening at AskColorado/AskAcademic since the start of the year that I thought library folks might be interested in hearing about:

1.       Our after-hours service is growing: Last February I started our own after-hours service, hiring librarians in the metro area to staff the service evenings, nights, and weekends. We started with a crew of nine librarians, and have grown to a current staff of fifteen. We *may* have some openings for part-time librarians coming-up. Traveling Exhibit of Interest to Rural & Small Libraries

On behalf of Sonja Plummer-Morgan, Mark & Emily Turner Memorial Library, Presque Isle, Maine:

The ALA Public Programs Office is pleased to announce three new traveling exhibits focusing on Jewish artists who have contributed to the culture of America and the world through their lives and work. Public, academic and special libraries, including museum libraries and Jewish community centers are invited to apply by January 24.

The exhibits were developed by Nextbook, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting Jewish literature, culture and ideas, and the ALA Public Programs Office, with funding from Nextbook.  The national exhibit tours have been made possible by grants from the Charles H. Revson Foundation, the David Berg Foundation and the Nash Family Foundation, with additional support from Tablet Magazine: A New Read on Jewish Life.

AskColorado Celebrates Seven Years, Nears 300,000 Questions

This Thursday AskColorado is celebrating its seventh anniversary. Since Sept. 2, 2003, AskColorado, your statewide cooperative virtual reference service, has quietly and efficiently answered nearly 300,000 questions from students, parents, business owners, military personnel, and other residents of Colorado. Thank you to all Colorado librarians, who, over the years, have helped us to make AskColorado the high quality, personalized service that it is today. Print You may now place your order for READ pins for the 2011 children, teen, and adult summer reading program themes: “One World, Many Stories,”  “You Are Here,” and “Novel Destinations.”

We received over 150 votes for this year’s pin (!), but one of the designs was the clear winner. View the final design. For those who asked, the star on the pin roughly marks the Bermuda Triangle. We think it’s a fun and unexpected design element.

Free Library Subscriptions to “care ADvantage” (Alzheimer’s disease) magazine

The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America is offering free library subscriptions to care ADvantage, a quarterly publication for caregivers and individuals affected by Alzheimer’s disease and related illnesses.

Each issue of care ADvantage presents articles written by top experts in their respective fields, offering valuable information and insight into a wide range of timely topics from the medical and practical to the emotional and inspirational.

Over 200 public libraries nationwide have subscribed thus far, and we would love to extend an invitation to you to join them in providing this magazine so patrons who are affected by Alzheimer’s disease and related illnesses can have greater access to the information and support that is available to them. We would also greatly appreciate your help in spreading the word to other libraries across the nation, if possible.
