It’s Showtime! @ Your Library

Cinematic programming can be a phenomenal way to promote library services and the library as a fun interactive community gathering space. Many libraries here in Colorado show films either as part of a seasonal event or throughout the year. Some libraries operate these events as an extension of their Collection Development department, have committees to oversee and staff the events or even have one lone devotee who manages the entire affair. Most libraries have a blanket license, most commonly from Swank, also know as Movie Licensing USA, to avoid any copyright infringement. Children’s Art Benefits Arapahoe Libraries

The Arapahoe Library District is participating in the Tile Project which will showcase the artwork of Colorado children painted on tiles and displayed in the concierge lobby at the new Streets of SouthGlenn shopping plaza. Tiles are $25, and tax-deductible, with all proceeds going to the Arapahoe Library District Friends Foundation to assist with programming such as the Summer Reading Program, writing workshops and computer classes. The tiles will be painted over several Saturdays – August 29th, September 12th, and September 19th with sessions in the morning (10am-1pm) and in the afternoon (1pm-4pm). Tiles, paint and brushes will be provided. There are a limited number of tiles available and time slots are available on a first come, first served basis. The last day to register is September 15th. All participants will be invited to a special breakfast to celebrate the wall’s unveiling.

Those interested in volunteering for the Tile Project or with the Arapahoe Library District, please contact Louise Richey at lrichey@ald.lib.co.us or 303.792.8999 extension 19106.

Library Fights Graffiti with Art

Congratulations to the Athmar Park Branch Library who is the recipient of a grant from the Urban Arts Fund and will participating with an anti-graffiti-vandalism project this summer! This purpose of this project is to raise awareness about graffiti and will encourage kids and adults alike to take pride in their community.

The theme of their project, a mural, will be “Knowledge is Power.”  The mural will say “Athmar Park Library” and will feature the work of many local artists! These local artists will consist of neighborhood youth in grades 5 through 12. Their work will be documented using photos, videos, and podcasts which will be posted on the eVolver website.

The mural, which will be hung on the south-facing wall of the Athmar Park Library as a permanent art installation, will be unveiled on August 19!
