All of Shelley's Stuff

Back From CAL

CAL was great this year; in fact the one complaint I heard was that there were too many good sessions being offered at the same time! CLiC had a lot of fun at their booth practicing our French and speaking to folks from around the State. Winners for our Nancy Pearl prizes are Sue Keefer – Fort Lyon Correctional Center and Megan Ellis – Aurora Public Library. Valerie’s presentation on “How to Manage Your Boss” and Shelley’s “Time Management: The GTD Way” were both highly attended and well received. Lisa was the proud recipient of the CAL award for the Best Technology project for LEO, which she graciously shared with the CLiC staff and Quipu group. Ross celebrated a “special” birthday, calling on his good humor while colleagues made sure everyone at the conference knew to wish him Happy Birthday. Robin had her first exposure to working in the booth and enjoyed meeting so many new people. Kudos to the planning committee, headed by Jen Cotton and Jo Sarling who did a fabulous job, and especially to Kathleen Nolan, who is just amazing. Everyone enjoy your Thanksgiving holiday and safe travels.

News from ALA Annual Conference

The conference in DC was great – learned a lot, met fascinating people, and stayed relatively cool for DC. Valerie presented a session on Sunday giving feedback on our Courier Conference last September. There were some complaints about undersized rooms, but all in all, the conference is well worth anyone’s time. Reports on the various council meetings can be found at http://coloradocouncilor.blogspot.com We had a get together at the Council suite for Coloradoans attending the conference and saw almost 20 folks, including Emerging Leaders, Dianna Fricke and Nikki Van Thiel. Monica Kirby from Spanish Peaks got an appointment with Senator Salazar at his office on the Hill and several people joined her for the 5 minute appointment! Over 2000 librarians invaded the Hill on Tuesday afternoon to speak up on library issues. I have a list of all the issues currently facing Congress that ALA put together if anyone is interested. (I had a mandatory Council meeting that prevented me from meeting with Senator Salazar.)
One of the many new things that ALA highlighted during the conference was their new public advocacy website, I Love Libraries. http://ilovelibraries.org The site contains a variety of features designed to attract—and hold the attention of—library lovers of all kinds: reviews of new and award-winning books, fast-breaking library news, library spotlights, a “find a library” feature, blogs and newsfeeds, as well as library-related links on YouTube and flickr. When you get a second, check it out!

Grants Aren’t Always A Long Shot

Congratulations to several Coloradoans who received some grant money this month. Patty Chapman, Judy Van Acker and Sue Keefer received the Colorado State Library’s scholarship to attend ALA. This must have been Sue’s lucky month, because she also received an additional $5000 from Anschutz Family Foundation to boost her general operating costs to support ongoing programs that reach out to the Spanish community. Lastly, Gretchen Villers from Custer County School District received $5000 from ALA’s ALSC Division from their Bookapalooza Grant. This grant gives only 3 libraries across the country $5000 in free books.

Gretchen stated in her application,
“I want my students to experience not just the horses, cattle and rodeo of our ranching community, but to also know about Africa and New York City and people who are different from them. I believe it is through books that our children can experience this.”
Congratulations, Gretchen!

The point in all this is to encourage you to take some time to look at some of these opportunities and see if they fit with your goals. CLiC consultants are happy to offer advice and direct you to resources that can help make sure you have the best chance of receiving additional funding. If I missed anyone, please comment on my post!

Federal Judge Blocks COPA

On March 22 a federal judge stuck down the very unpopular Child Online Protection Act (COPA), a law whose purpose was to protect children from harmful sexual materials. As the ALA website stated, COPA “made it a crime for commercial websites to allow access to “harmful” material without first verifying user ages.”

This law was originally passed in 1998, but it has never been enforced due to various injunctions and challenges. Those against the law state that it violates free speech. Since the law was only going to block US providers, it was unlikely that it was going to have much of an affect on filtering harmful materials to minors.

The federal judge commented that “perhaps we do the minors of this country harm if First Amendment protections, which they will with age inherit fully, are chipped away in the name of their protection.” (ALA Website)

Do not confuse this law with COPPA, the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, which remains in force and limits the ability of sites to offer services to those aged twelve and under without explicit parental consent. (Wikipedia)
