About Judy

I am the SE Library Consultant for CLiC. Major passions are (besides my family - that's a given) dinking in my garden, reading blogs, listening to podcasts, and trying to locate a beach to sit on once a year. Hoping you will find this blog valuable, because we sure had a great time creating it!

CALCON- an lluminating Success!

Hi praise for the Colorado Association of Libraries 2010 Conference. Aside from tons of inspiring workshops, keynote speakers, and author visits this year CAL was just plain fun! Wish I could show you  pics of the hootin’ and hollerin’ that took place at Battle Decks Friday night, but we were having too much fun to even think about snapping shots. We did manage to grab some conference photos for your enjoyment, though. Mark your calendar for the next CAL Conference (Oct. 13-15th 2011) at the same gorgeous hotel – Embassy Suites in Loveland. Kudos to the conference planning committee. You rock!

Libraries are Screwed!

“Libraries are screwed”, says Eli Neiburger Associate Director IT and Production at the Ann Arbor Library District. Luckily, he has a lot more to say about the future of libraries in his presentation at Library Journal’s E-book Summit. A very concise and thorough paragraph (from Librarian In Black) explaining his views can be found here. Trot off to read that and then come back and post your thoughts. Will libraries morph, or go the way of the dinosaurs?

Business Owner Gives Back

Pichado Photography

A businessman’s letter to the Director of the Manitou Springs Public Library – Margaret Morris (post flood).

“The library is good and dry and all the noisy equipment is gone.

If we can provide  any help getting the library back in order let me know and MediClean will take care of it during our regular scheduled cleaning. I will also donate the time I spent out there Thursday.  I think Public Libraries are the greatest! I know if it wasn’t for the help I received at my local Public Library I would have never been able to start my own business. I spent a lot of time at the my local Library  learning how to use a computer before I could afford to buy my own. A Library is also full of many other resources helpful to the small business person. Also the Free computer classes & helpful staff helped out a lot too. My way of giving back.” ~ Charles Blue

Libraries Mean Business and so much more

Please read further – past the bullet points. I dare you not to get misty-eyed. ~ Judy VanAcker

Libraries mean business.  ~ Aspen Walker (Douglas County Libraries)

  • We help people get their small business started, and provide resources to help them excel and persist.
  • We draw folks into town and commerce centers, and then they spend their money in area businesses (did you know that the Philip S. Miller Library is the number one reason people visit downtown Castle Rock, Colorado? Between January-July of this year, the library has already 285,566 visitors. That’s almost 9,500+ people a week! And when they do visit, they spend at least $20 in surrounding stores. We’re an anchor store… with a benevolent [and fun!] social purpose).
  • We offer an amazing return on investment. I only pay $42 a year in taxes to fund my local library, but I enjoy hundreds of dollars worth of materials and services every year. In fact, for every dollar invested in my library district, we return at least $5 in value. Magic? No. It’s the sheer wonder of the public library.
  • We help people find jobs. My friend Tana, shared a poignant story with me earlier this year, based on an actual experience she had working in public libraries:

Splashes at the Canon City Public Library

Kids and adults as well had a splashing good time at the Canon City Public Library this past Saturday. The library is conducting  phenomenal programs for this year’s 2010 Summer Reading Program. An added bonus this year is that the Canon City Farmers Market is located right in front of the library. The really good news is that are lots of folks walking past the library and discovering a hidden treasure.

La Junta Makes a Big Splash!

The Woodruff Memorial Library in La Junta is making a big splash this year with hundreds of children signed up and attending the Summer Reading Program. Each year the staff decorates the the library in fantastic style. This year boasts a real live boat, fabric galore, tinted windows, stuffed animals everywhere, and a Tiki house to pick up prizes. And boy do they have the prizes – a Sony Reader, a jar full of coins, pool passes, and so much more. Kids are certainly reading tons of books, which is exactly what the staff had in mind. Congratulations on a terrific program, Woodruff!

Businesses promote library

Hats off to local artist, Mary Jean Fowler, who created a paper Mache frog, which is now  displayed in the local grocery store (Charlies) in La Veta, CO . The frog encourages folks  to visit the public library. What a wonderful display of cooperation and collaboration between local business people and the library. Thanks go to Library Director, Sandy Hackbarth, for submitting this photo and other photos of figures throughout the town.

Summertime Fun!

Visited some libraries yesterday. Discovered what they are up to – Making a Splash! If you have photos you’d like to share – email them to jvanacker@clicweb.org . We’ll put them up on the Colorado Libraries Blog Flickr site. We wanna see your pics!
