Library Stories from the CSL Booth at CAL

The State Library’s booth at CAL in November 2009 had the theme “Libraries: A Place of Endless Possibilities”. Visitors were encouraged to share their stories by writing them, typing them or telling them (to our flip cameras).

Now you can read or listen to the fantastic stories of your colleagues and celebrate the many ways libraries transform lives.

Conditions of U.S. Libraries: Trends 1999-2009

Elena Rosenfeld, Colorado Association of Libraries ALA Chapter Counselor, passed this press release on from ALA. Great statistics and information. How would you use this to advocate for libraries in your community?

New ALA report details economic trends in libraries and 2010 outlook
CHICAGO – At every turn, news reports and research indicate fairly dramatic changes in U.S. library funding, services and staffing – most occurring in the last 18 months. According to a new report prepared by the American Library Association (ALA), libraries of all types are feeling the pinch of the economic downturn while managing sky-high use.

Compiled from a broad range of available sources, The Condition of Libraries: 1999-2009 presents U.S. economic trends (2009), and summarizes trends in public, school and academic libraries across several library measures, including expenditures, staffing and services. The report also highlights trends in services provided to libraries by library cooperatives and consortia.

Health Information Resources for Seniors

Posted on behalf of –  Dana Abbey, MLS Consumer Health Coordinator National Network of Libraries of Medicine University of Colorado Denver

William completed the Boston Marathon at the age of 67. Now, in his late-80s he continues to enjoy hiking, skiing and running.  Mildred, 73, hits the step machine after complete knee replacement surgery and daily increases her walking distance. These are just two of the inspirational stories on the National Library of Medicine’s (NLM) NIHSeniorHealth website . Often times these stories cross my mind as I watch the seconds painfully ticking away on the treadmill timer. However, William and Mildred’s dedication, along with the other 26 engaging exercise stories, keep me motivated to exercise for life.

CMHI-Fort Logan Library Wins $2,500 Grant

The Rene Spitz School Library at the Colorado Mental Health Institute at Fort Logan (CMHI-FL) is the recipient of a $2,500 grant from the Lois Lenski Covey Foundation, Inc. Librarian Kate Elder requested the grant to purchase audiobooks to accompany the library’s most popular books, plus additional bundles of books and audio packaged together.
CMHI-FL is one of Colorado’s two state hospitals providing mental health services for persons with complex, serious, and persistent mental illness. Over 85% of students admitted to CMHI-FL’s residential school program read below grade level. For these students, access to audiobooks provides access to age-appropriate vocabulary and content in materials beyond their reading level. In particular, audiobooks can be an extremely useful learning tool to motivate poor readers, reluctant readers, or struggling readers.
The Lois Lenski Covey Foundation, Inc. is a charitable institute whose purpose is to assist organizations in providing books to children who might otherwise lack access to children’s literature. For more information, see http://www.loislenskicovey.org/index.html.
