National Conference on Homeless Youth in Denver – November

The National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth will hold their annual conference in Denver on November 14 – 17.  http://www.naehcy.org/conf/conf_2009.html  This is a great opportunity for library and school professionals to learn more about the needs of this important population.  The program includes nationally known speakers and break out sessions about services and educational programs for homeless youth.  Because it is in our area, this is a great opportunity for school and public library staff to attend.

On Wednesday this week the gang met at the new Spanish Peaks Library in Walsenburg. In addition to talking shop, attendees were treated to a comprehensive tour of this eco-friendly library. Check out our Flickr site for more photos, including rare behind-the-scenes shots of the 2nd and 3rd floors to get a sense of how the 1st floor looked before it was renovated!

2009-2010 Public Library Funding and Technology Access Survey

The 2009-2010 Public Library Funding & Technology Access survey conducted by the American Library Association (ALA) and the Center for Library & Information Innovation at the University of Maryland is now available for completion.

Your participation in the survey is extremely important, and directly impacts the ability of ALA and others to advocate on behalf of public libraries and the tremendous contribution public libraries make to  their communities through their public access Internet services and resources. Data from the study appeared most recently in USA Today in a discussion of how public libraries help job seekers.

The survey is open through November 6, 2009.  You will need an ID number, which you may look up on the website. Questions regarding the survey should be directed to support@plinternetsurvey.org or 301-405-9445. Continue reading ‘2009-2010 Public Library Funding and Technology Access Survey’

A Rural Good Time

The Park Vista Hotel hosted over 340 librarians at the Rural & Small Library Conference in Gatlinburg Tennessee. The Smoky Mountain were a sight to behold, and the weather couldn’t have been better. The snakes I could have done without though! It was a real treat to see the rural Anna Porter Public Library implement a book store type model library in their small town of 3,500 people. Mark your calendar for Next year’s conference. It is going to right in your backyard (Denver!) on October 14-16th 2010. Gatlinburg will be hard to beat, but we are sure going to try!
