Colorado Benefits from IMLS Grant

The Institute for Museums and Library Services recently released its list of June 2009 grant recipients (http://www.imls.gov/news/2009/061709b_list.shtm).  One of these awards is a nearly $1M grant to Denver Public Library (principal investigator is DPL’s Kristen Svendsen); grant partners include REFORMA-Colorado, the Colorado Association of Libraries, and the University of Denver.  The purpose of the grant is to increase the number of librarians with the skills and knowledge to serve linguistically and culturally diverse communities.  The money will be used to pay full-tuition and scholarships for 18 students to obtain their master’s degrees at the University of Denver’s library school.  (This is the 3rd such grant received by DPL; it is known locally as “Leaders III”.)

Library Fights Graffiti with Art

Congratulations to the Athmar Park Branch Library who is the recipient of a grant from the Urban Arts Fund and will participating with an anti-graffiti-vandalism project this summer! This purpose of this project is to raise awareness about graffiti and will encourage kids and adults alike to take pride in their community.

The theme of their project, a mural, will be “Knowledge is Power.”  The mural will say “Athmar Park Library” and will feature the work of many local artists! These local artists will consist of neighborhood youth in grades 5 through 12. Their work will be documented using photos, videos, and podcasts which will be posted on the eVolver website.

The mural, which will be hung on the south-facing wall of the Athmar Park Library as a permanent art installation, will be unveiled on August 19!

Cool Technology at Estes Park Public Library

Vertical CatalogI had the pleasure of visiting the Estes Park Public Library for an AskColorado meeting. The facility is beautiful (and really aren’t all libraries?), and the surroundings enchanting. However, it was the unusual configuration of their catalogs that caught my eye.

These vertical catalog stations appear to run on magic…where is the CPU?

Thanks to Claudine Perrault and Mark Riffle for the detailed documentation of how these cool catalogs are set up: Continue reading ‘Cool Technology at Estes Park Public Library’
