Out of 73 institutions, Colorado has only 11 libraries that have completed the 2008 Academic Libraries Survey. This is far from the 85% required to close the survey.
How can we discuss the value of academic libraries if we don’t have basic data about outlets, staff, collections, services, and expenditures?
Data collection for the 2008 Academic Libraries Survey (ALS) began on November 5, 2008 and ends on February 25, 2009.
Please register, then enter and lock your data as soon as possible on the ALS Web site at http://surveys.nces.ed.gov/libraries/als

Yesterday in my travels around southeast Colorado, I found a jewel of a library. It is nestled snugly in the heart of downtown Aguilar (pop. 593). What makes this library sparkle is Cindy Gongaware, the library director. Cindy had exciting news to report. Her involvement in a Rural USDA grant netted five flat screen computers and five laptops. “The library really picked up after that”, reports Cindy. Her partnership with town officials and her community is what keeps this library alive and vibrant. The city provides housing for the library and all its amenities, while the community generously donates its new/used books for the collection. It’s a wonderful symbiotic – almost love relationship. Happy Valentines Day, everyone!

On a very frosty evening, January 26, nine intrepid ALA Midwinter attendees braved the cold — and perhaps some trepidation at the thought of razor wire, locked gates, and Erica’s driving — to tour the Denver Women’s Correctional Facility and library.
Diana Reese, Erica MacCreaigh, and Lt. Gary Dolan were joined by academic, school, and public librarians, a corrections librarian, and an MLIS student for a two-hour tour of DWCF’s programs and housing – including the rehabilitative Therapeutic Community unit and the lively minimum security dog training unit –which culminated in a visit to the facility library. Due to a significant spike in job seeking patrons without computer skills visiting our computer lab, we’re considering instructional courses for this group. Right now we’re in “research mode” and looking for inspiration/tips from others who have already provided resources or classes on this topic. If not your library, then perhaps you know another library that has developed programming for this demographic?

This year I was lucky enough to attend my first-ever ALA. On Friday, January 23rd, I braved the Colorado Convention Center (and its dizzying parking structure) to browse the exhibits hall. I think “wow” was the first word I thought as I entered the huge building and saw the mass of people all crowding on to the escalators. That word was repeated often throughout the evening, first as I took in the sheer number of booths, and later as I realized how much – there’s no other word for it – stuff – was being given away. It was overwhelming. More than that, though, it was fascinating. I was grateful to have the opportunity to be a real part of the national library community; I met people from right here in the state, from around the U.S. including New Mexico and New York, and even some overseas folks.
