“Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World”

Dewey the Libary Cat

Dewey is coming to the big screen (reportedly starring Meryl Streep). Library Cat is a movie about a stray cat’s impact on an Iowa town. “Abandoned as a kitten in the Spencer Public Library’s book-return box one January night in 1988, Dewey was adopted by librarians and named by the town in a write-in contest. He lived happily ever after at the library, sleeping in the stacks (he liked Westerns), riding the book cart, leaping from fluorescent light fixtures and sitting on patrons’ laps.”

Being the crazy cat person that I am, this will be a must see. Do any Colorado libraries out there have a library cat? I wish I could bring my cat Mia to the office…but she probably wouldn’t care for the drive in.

I haven’t read the book yet. If you have, please leave a comment and tell us what you thought.

  • I just read this book, and I really enjoyed it. I wish the Pueblo Library would get a cat! I guess that the main building is too big, but maybe one of the branches?

I was enchanted with Dewey and his antics. The book is, really, more about the librarian and her trials than it is about the cat, but still, I found it an enjoyable read, and I recommend it. It’s light, reads easily and has a 5 hanky ending. There are quite a few videos on youtube – just search for “dewey library cat” and you ought to find them.

  • just finished the book and loved it…being a cat lover anyway, i was totally enchanted by dewey and the people of spencer. wish i had known him.

  • Fairplay Library has a library cat. His name is Judge Kitty (the library is in the old courthouse). He has been living here for many years. Patrons love him and he loves the attention and lots of different laps he gets to sit on. He gets gifts from friends and people donate to the Friends of the Library, who are responsible for his food, vet bills, etc. We have just come out with a calendar for 2009, all about Judge.

  • This is one of the sweetest books I have ever read! I loved it..I like kitty cats anyway..My friend, Betty, loaned it to me. I have 6 outside cats and they are all beautiful!
